I can’t find my friend with the search function; It is possible that they do not have a Nokia account yet.
To invite a friend to the community, select Recommend to friend. The invitation is sent as a text message. Friends who do not yet have a Nokia account can register and create their own account by clicking the link in the invitation.
I received an invitation from my friend to join Ovi Contacts, what do I have to do?
Your invitation message includes a link to a page where you can create an account and download the client to your mobile device. After you have created the account, you will receive a friend request from the friend who sent you the invitation. After you have accepted the request, you can start chatting with your friend.
Can I connect with my friends who use other IM services?
You can add friends who use Google Talk™ and other XMPP/Jabber-based IM services to your friends list, see their statuses, and chat with them.
How do I add friends from different service domains to my friends list?
To add friends from different service domains to your friends list, do the following:
1.Select Options > Add friend.
2.Enter your friend’s user name and domain.
3.Select Options > Add as friends.
How can I inform my location to my friends?
To receive location information from your chat partner, you must have the Maps application installed on your mobile device. To send and receive location information, you must have the Maps and Positioning applications installed on your mobile device.
To send your location to your friend, select Send Location. Your friend will see your location in the Maps application view.
To let your friends know where you like to be, without telling them your exact location, do the following:
1.Select Options > Settings > Presence > Location. If you have not saved any landmarks, you are asked if you want to create a landmark. You can create a landmark of your current position or you can search for locations from the map.
2.Activate the broadcasting setting.
3.Select which landmarks you want to broadcast and how frequently your location information is updated.
Can I change my status?
You can change your online status in the My Status menu. Your status is indicated by the following colours:
  • Green = Available
  • Green with yellow smiley = Available for chat
  • Blue = On the phone
  • Yellow = Away
  • Red = Do not disturb
  • Grey = Offline
You can also personalise your status message.
How can I share information about the music I am playing?
Chat enables you to share information about the music you are playing. This can be done by activating the Now playing sharing feature from My profile. When you play a song with the music player, your friends can see the song title and artist information in your profile.
To share music information with your friends, your friend must also have a client that supports Now playing information sharing.
Will the chat history be stored on the device?
The chat history is available as long as the conversation is open. The conversation is deleted when you end the chat. To save parts of the discussion, you can copy and paste text and use the Notes application.
Handovers: Can I move between different hot spots? What if I move away from the WLAN hot spot?
You can move between different hot spots. If a wireless local area network (WLAN) connection is not available, the connection is switched to GPRS (if allowed). You can use both WLAN and GPRS to ensure the best possible combination for staying connected.
When you start using the application, you are prompted to select which WLAN and GPRS access points are used. To edit access point settings, select Options > Settings > Connection.
Does the chat feature cost anything?
The application itself is free. However, the usage of the application may involve the transmission of large amounts of data through your service provider's network. Contact your service provider for information about data transmission charges. A fixed rate mobile data plan is strongly recommended. The mobile client can also use a WLAN connection.
How does Ovi Contacts differ from other presence services?
The wireless communication industry has the opportunity to make this the most relevant form of communication for you. Presence on mobile is much more effective than presence in the computer world.
Is this a closed, Nokia-only solution?
No. Ovi Contacts is based on the standard XMPP protocol and there is an in-built federation of XMPP communities like Google and Jabber. Nokia’s presence solutions link to 3rd party solutions and aim to increase communication between people.
How much data traffic does using the chat feature will generate?
The average user will consume about 4 MB of data when using the service over a month. Data consumption depends on the amount of friends you have, amount of messages you exchange, and your network conditions.
Does chat work in any mobile network?
Chat works in any GPRS network as well as in WLANs.
