Truphone 3.3 has all the same great features, including Truphone over 3G, free SMS to other online Truphone users and multi-SIM for Travellers, this new version fixes a few pesky bugs as well as improving Wi-Fi access point management and reliability.
We've now made it easier for you to create a priority list of your preferred access points (like your home or office) and Truphone will automatically connect to them, as soon as you're in range.
You can still set up as many access points as you like, it just means that Truphone will manage them so you don't have to.
Setting up your access point priority list is easy. Simply run Truphone on your handset as normal, scroll to the right and move your preferred access points above the auto-connect line.
What is Truphone?
Truphone is a mobile operator for the internet era.
That means free mobile calls to other Truphone users or very cheap calls to anyone else.
And what's more, if you sign up before 30th September 2007, you'll get free calls to 1.6 billion landlines worldwide for the rest of the year.
How it works
Truphone saves you money by routing calls over the internet rather than via traditional mobile operators - thus cutting out the middle man and saving you money.
How it really works (geeks only)
Not only have we built a software-only network operator, we have done so almost entirely using freely-available open source technology and internationally-recognised open standards. Take a deep breath and read more technical nitty gritty.
Where can I use it?
Truphone works wherever you have access to the internet via Wi-Fi (or 3G) and the availability of wireless connectivity is absolutely booming.
This can mean your home, office, public areas or commercial hotspots (coffee shops, airports etc). You will be able to make free or VoIP-rate calls from your sofa or when visiting friends with Wi-Fi. Similarly, Truphone calls can be made from your office and other workplaces you visit.
Truphone now roams seamlessly on The Cloud's network of hotspots. That means you walk into one of 7,000+ UK locations - such as airports, coffee shops, pubs or train stations - run the new Wizard, and Truphone just works. This hotspot service adds 3p/min to incoming and outgoing calls, so treat yourself to a muffin while you're saving money and sipping cappuccinos. New users will automatically be hotspot-enabled.
What phones does it work on?
Truphone aims to bring VoIP to mass-market mobile phones, starting with Nokia's N-series and E-series, to be quickly followed by other handsets.
Numbering & international
Truphone is available to download and use across the globe. You can install Truphone right now and begin making free or VoIP-rate calls. Please check the legal status of VoIP in the territory where you intend using Truphone before using the service.
Truphone's aim to is to roll out a full operator service which includes our own set of local country phone numbers.
As our first step towards this, users in the UK and US will get Truphone numbers appropriate to their countries (i.e. +44 and +1 respectively). These users will be able to make and receive calls on their Truphone numbers as normal. Users elsewhere will not be given a Truphone number for now.
No Emergency Calls
Truphone is not a replacement for your ordinary telephone service and you cannot make emergency calls using Truphone. However this does not prevent you using your mobile phone for making emergency calls via your Cellular Provider as normal.
