Thumbs up Vodafone news

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]

Not that we were all that excited for Vodafone to launch their [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] slider from HTC ([Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]?), but we thought a few of you out there might want to know that the [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] has been pulled from [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] lineup.
Vodafone gave no reason for killing the Vodafone 920, but we’re figuring it might have something to do with certification tests or maybe some conflicting product offerings. Whatever the reason, we hope you weren’t planning on grabbing a Vodafone 920 for yourself, you’ll just have to make do with another HTC-based Windows Mobile device. Take a look at the T-Mobile Shadow, it’s fairly similar to the Vodafone 920 - all may not be lost (of course, the two are offered in different markets, so we’ll leave the importing up tot you).
Come to think of it, Vodafone may have done you a favor, with all those incredible WinMo offerings (especially from HTC) on the market, you’d do better with less choices.

Thumbs up Samsung SGH-i640v coming to Vodafone UK soon

Even though we’ve already seen a [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] and even heard Vodafone saying it will launch the device as part of its [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...], the Windows Mobile powered slider is still not available for purchase. As a matter of fact, it keeps occupying space on the “Coming soon” section of Vodafone’s website.
Now, we have a new piece of information suggesting the Big Red will be releasing Samsung’s slider smartphone as soon as possible. What this means is hard to tell, but considering the fact that today is December 23rd, I doubt we’ll see it hitting the store shelves before the new year. On the second thought, I don’t actually care much about this device. The lack of WiFi connectivity is a deal breaker for me…

Thumbs up Toshiba Portégé G710 coming to Vodafone Germany as the VDA GPS

We’ve already [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] what’s Toshiba up to. One of the devices spotted includes the monoblock Portégé G710, which is heading to Vodafone Germany as VDA GPS. As you probably already know, it’s the quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE Windows Mobile 6 smartphone that also sports such goodies as Bluetooth, GPS, full QWERTY keyboard, and the 2 megapixel camera. On the down side, it lacks 3G and WiFi connectivity support, making it kinda strange buying choice, especially for corporate customers. However, the G710’s weaknesses may make the device more affordable — not that we know how much it will cost, nor when exactly it will be released.

Thumbs up UK MNO website homepages - part 1

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]
In a new section for IntoMobile, I am going to take a regular look at the state of the UK MNO homepages - in terms of what’s on them, their arrangement (user interface), and anything else that I think pertinent.
Web has grown to become it’s own respectable channel for purchasing, services, support, and CRM, so it’s only fair to spend some time taking a look at what’s on offer - if like me you browse mobile shops in the UK to see what is being promo’d, this would be the interweb equivalent!
First of all, we are going to take a look at two of the big boys - O2 and Vodafone:
O2

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] has the cool blue colour theme to it’s website - it’s easy on the eye, and the nice contrast of colours makes things stand out. There is always a battle between how much text you have on a page, but I would say the balance is pretty good. Promo-wise, the Nokia N95-8GB is featured, as O2 has just started selling them (Vodafone had the exclusive before). Interesting there is no sign of the iPhone on the homepage, but instead links to O2’s convergence offering of broadband….
Vodafone
[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]
[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] is (obviously) rocking the red colour scheme, and has adopted a not-dissimilar approach to O2 with the navigation options -horizontal menu banner, and columised categories. The feature phone is the (exclusive) Samsung F700. A Flash Tariff promo is also draws the eyes on page-load.
So that’s two of the big guns in the UK - Vodafone and O2 - their websites are functional (i.e. they serve the need), branded, and relatively clear - but do they do what you expect from them?
With the advent of AJAX-based ‘web 2.0′ pages (I had to toss a cliche in there!), should they be adopting a more interactive, and personalisable experience? Thoughts on a virtual postcard (the comments section) please….!

Thumbs up Vodafone Chops Dataplan Prices for New Users

More good news for prospective Vodafone users, as they drop their 3GB/month data plan to £15 (reports [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]). It's a long contract (18 or 24 months) but it does come with a USB 3G modem. No word if this will be available to existing users with data enabled handsets, but it's a sign that data pricing is definitely on its way to becoming a commodity, rather than a luxury, on people's monthly bills.

Thumbs up Vodafone Italy chooses Amobee for Ad-funded Video

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]
Short, sharp, and sweet: Amobee Media Systems has announced it has been chosen by Vodafone Italy to supply ad-funded Mobile Video content to it's users. This will be done in a similar way to recent announcements in Spain, Greece, and the Czech Republic. Quickplay Media will be powering the service using it's OpenMedia SDP (service delivery platform).
As I have mentioned in my previous post regarding a [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...], now is the time that Mobile Ads are becoming more sophisticated - whilst textual and image banners Ads in WAP are still around, we are now moving in the direction of dynamically-inserted Ad "pre-rolls" (a short ad inserted before the main video content), "interstitials", and "post-rolls"- of course, the idea with these being that as the user is definitely watching the video (since it's content they decided to view), then they will definitely see the Ad - hence the "eyeball" (as they call it in Ad-land), has definitely been on the Ad (as oppose to scanning past it on a static page for example).
Vodafone Italy are not the only ones to deploy this technology; 3UK did the same last year with Rhythm New Media.
So what do we think of it though - are you ready to have Ads "shown" to you, in return for cheaper content? Do you want the choice? Or do you not mind?

Thumbs up Vodafone 227, 228 low-end phones announced

During the Mobile World Congress, Vodafone has announced two new own branded mobile phones - Vodafone 227 (clamshell) and Vodafone 228 (slider). As it's usually the case with the carrier branded devices, they are pretty much simple to use and don't actually boast lots of features. With these two, Vodafone is targeting emerging markets but also people in Europe who want a simple phone that can take and make phone calls and do the "SMS thing." That being said, I guess both devices will sell like hot cupcakes from free with some kind of contract commitment to around 50 EUR on pay-as-you-go plans. We don't actually know the prices at this stage — it's just me speculating…

Thumbs up Vodafone to roll out self-help service directly on handsets

In an effort that's clearly designed to cut customer support costs, Vodafone will launch advanced customer services directly on the handset to give its subscribers "customer care and billing information" in real-time. The service will not only provide users with a self care facility but also gives Vodafone an added opportunity to provide interactive promotions and tutorials, such as step by step guides on how to use the mobile internet to download music or how to send an MMS.
Initially, only smartphone users will be able to use the self-care service, but the aim is to extend to the majority of handsets on offer from Vodafone over time.
Rolling out user-friendly self care services will NOT replace current customer care channels, but merely provide another support channel for the customers.
Finally, in case you care, SNAPin Software is the company that provides the solution behind the service.

Thumbs up Acision ports Vodafone UK to next-gen messaging

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]
Acision has announced that has begun migration to it's next-gen IP voice mesaging platofrm. As well as supporting existing messaging formats such as voicemail and SMS, newer formats such as mobile instant messaging will also be possible - and with good reason: next-gen messaging revenues have been predicted to be worth $12.7bn in W. Europe alone (Ovum).
Comment: we are likely to see a lot more of this going on in the background of operators - "IP" (an often maligned term, used to mean 'anything that isn't voice') will become the bearer of choice for most mobile comms, including voice - it's a slow process, but we are slowly getting there!

Thumbs up Vodafone adds BlackBerry to the set of preferred consumer operating platforms

During the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Vodafone announced that it will collaborate with Research In Motion (RIM) on the development of Vodafone consumer services for the BlackBerry platform. This move sees Vodafone add the BlackBerry platform to the set of preferred consumer operating platforms that it strategically supports. Other preferred platforms are Windows Mobile and Symbian S60, I guess.
Under the agreement, Vodafone and RIM will concentrate on "driving continued growth in business segments," and specifically, focusing on growing broader adoption in the consumer segment. Vodafone applications and services will also be tightly integrated with the BlackBerry platform.
Yeah, the mobile operators refuse to change. It's the (lucrative) control over user experience they prefer, rather than becoming dumb pipes…
