Thumbs up UK Retail: Top 10 Postpay and Prepay phones this week

For your general interest (and continuing on from [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]): Mobile Choice keep a weekly list of the Top 10 postpay and prepay phones in terms of sales in the UK, on a weekly basis. I thought we'd take a look what they are for w/c 15th Feb:

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]

In postpay, and not dissimilar from last time, the preponderance of Sony Ericsson and Nokia devices from their respective mid-ranges is quite clear to see. The N95 and N95-8Gb are also doing good numbers - I read somewhere recently that the N95 has done 7m units across continents, so that's a major win for Nokia!

In the land of prepay, SE and Nokia are again owning the market - although Nokia may have 40% market share on a European/Global basis (these stats are always disputed), SE are literally snapping at Nokia's heels in the UK.

I'll repeat this list in 1-2 weeks and see what shifts, if any we have

Thumbs up 1 in 5 of Us Use Phones For Our Mobile Music

Up to 20% of mobile users are listening to music on their mobile. That's the findings of [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] (via [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]). This sits very nicely with the numbers Nokia have reported for sage of their Music Store - 20% of eligible users have registered with the store. Nokia also report that 25% of that number (ie 5% of the total) use the on-device client; a significant improvement on the 1.1% that M:Metrics report downloading direct to the device.

Of course that number is for mobile phones globally, and most modern mobiles can play MP3 in some format (even a mono MP3 ring-tone probably qualifies for this survey), so that's not a complete 1 to 1 comparison. I'd be interested in seeing a breakdown on a per device basis and see if the music based handsets do have a x5 improvement over the regular handsets.

"Mobile music is quickly catching on, and the fact that consumers are sharing music demonstrates its potential as a social, viral phenomenon centered on mobile handsets," said Jen Wu, analyst, M:Metrics. "The proliferation of musicphones is causing a shift in digital music toward the mobile platform, which opens numerous opportunities for music-related content, services, hardware and accessories built to accommodate or enhance these mobile music activities."

Thumbs up Juniper Research: Mobile adult video chat revenues to hit $1.5bn by 2012

Following the success of its "desktop counterpart," mobile adult video chat is set to grow in the coming years. According to Juniper Research's latest report titled "Mobile Adult: Subscriptions, Downloads, Video Chat & Text-Based Services 2007-2012 (Fourth Edition)," global revenues from adult video chat services are expected to rise sharply over the next five years, reaching $1.5bn by 2012.

The report states that, while adoption levels of such services are comparatively low even by the standard of mobile adult services, the average monthly spend of this niche market is typically 10-20x higher than for other adult services.

Smile UK: Buongiorno surveys 18-34 yr olds

Buongiorno have just published research that tries to understand the "mobile browsing behaviour" of 18-34 yr olds in the UK. Fortunately it shows a positive trend in terms of amount of access (phew, I almost thought mobile browsing was going to be a failure for a second there! ), and divides users in to two groups - Embracers and Pragmatists.

Apparently the Embracers are those that can't stop playing with their Mobys (I think another word is addicts?!) - they browse not just for a purpose, but because they can - be it entertainment, filling in time, or on Mobile versions of certain social networking sites (I suspect one of those starts with Face and ends with book…..). This group connects to the moby-interweb up to 3x/day!

The Pragmatists, as I eluded to above, use their Mobys as a tool - they browse for a reason, and that is usually to be productive, or get information. This group accesses less frequently at 2-3x/week, and only for relatively basic tasks.

Well it's quite an interesting take on things, isn't it - Buongiorno are a BIG contnet aggregator, so clearly they have some experience in this stuff (and on a personal note, they are also great to work with ). If Moby-browsing users really are just two types, then it's quite a polar divide between them…..

Smile Are you addicted to your mobile phone?

Well, according to a recent UK study by Professor Nada Kakabadse of Northampton University, there's about a 33% (one-third) likelihood that you are indeed addicted to your mobile phone or similar electronic doohickey. Of 360 study participants, about one-third were suggested to be addicted to their mobile gadgets.

The addiction apparently starts off as an expected boost in productivity - hyper-connectivity allows workers to constantly be a few keystrokes away from work-related emails and messages. But, as time goes on, the addiction progresses and manifests itself in gadget-longing anxiety. Often, the addiction can go undetected, and by the time the diagnoses is made, it's "too late."

Kakabadse is calling for workplaces to give employees a heads up on how to safely use those dangerous mobile devices.

Anyone else out there get anxious when you don't have immediate access to your cellphone? Do you sleep with your mobile phone (which can also cause [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...], by the way)? Do you wake up in the middle of the night to check messages? Does your mobile phone take priority over your friends and loved ones? Be careful, you might be addicted. I'm surely not addicted…wait, where's my phone?! Oh, there it is…good.

Research and Markets: Two trillion SMS this year

People all around the world keep texting like crazy. According to Research and Markets' latest report, over 2 trillion (2 followed by 12 zeros) messages will be sent worldwide this year, with expected revenue from text messaging to account for around $65-75 billion. However, while the overall mobile messaging traffic volumes will increase, revenues are expected to slightly dampen down messaging revenue growth, thanks to the market saturation and increasing competition. As usual, it's the Asia-Pacific region where most of the growth will come from…
I'm sure you can guess for yourself the Research and Markets' report "2008 Global Mobile - Data and Content Markets" doesn't deal with SMS only. Other topics covered include mobile video, mobile TV, m-commerce, RFID, mobile intrastructure, regional overview, etc. More information is available from [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links.
