Thumbs up Symbian news

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]

We all know how China is important to all mobile industry players, hence virtually every single major mobile tech company is present there in one form or another.
Now we have Symbian Limited, developer and licensor of the market-leading smartphone operating system - Symbian OS, acquiring the personnel and technology the China-based smartphone application developer - Beijing Genesis Interactive Technology Co. Ltd. (MoGenesis) to additionally boost its [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] in the “world’s fastest growing economy.”
As for the personnel changes, MoGenesis’ CEO Dennis Kung, who previously held two senior positions in Microsoft, is appointed as the new General Manager for Symbian in China to “spearhead Symbian product development in the region.”
Commenting on the acquisition, Symbian’s CEO Nigel Clifford said, “The acquisition will play a key role in Symbian’s global R&D strategy for our world-leading customers. China is one of the fastest growing markets for smartphones in the world and we will leverage our new Chinese resources to increase Symbian OS global product development. Symbian achieved 60% smartphone OS market share in China with 77% year on year growth, according to one analyst (Canalys) in Q207. We intend to continue growing our sales and our presence in this very vibrant market.”

Thumbs up Breaking: S60 becomes fully LAMP compatible

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...][Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and the P can be either Perl, PHP or Python. Everything you need to run a full web server can now be installed and run on your S60 device! What does this mean in the future? How about having a computer that is nothing more than a display, keyboard, and mouse running a barebones Linux stack with a web browser. You walk up to it and connect your S60 device and now you have a full blown computer. Very powerful stuff, very experimental stuff. When people tell me projectors inside cellphones are cool and the will lead to the next wave of innovation I laugh at them. With the prices of displays dropping you’re going to see a lot of IP based panels everywhere in your environment. Combine that with Bluetooth that activates by a single touch and you’re soon going to realize the fully hyperconnected world of everything electronic having an IP address.
Thanks to Jukka for the email telling me about this, he blogged it over [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]. Don’t forget to listen to the [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] where Phil interviews him about the mobile web server.

Thumbs up Video: Python for S60 makes phones have feelings

Less than 40 lines of code and quite a humorous way to advertise the [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]. Check it out:

The Nokia 5500 has an accelerometer and pretty soon it will be standard on all mobile devices. While the applications created using this technology are useless now and mere tech demos, they do demonstrate that controlling a mobile with these gestures is coming sooner rather than later.

Thumbs up MMPlayer (of Palm OS fame) now available for Symbian

The award winning MMplayer is a multimedia player with support for various media formats such as OGG, AVI, MP4, MPEG, etc. Previously available for Palm OS 5 only, it has now been ported to Symbian UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition. Head over to its [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] for more information and download. Some screenshots after the break.

MMPlayer is a media player currently available for Palm OS5 and Symbian devices. It's capable of playing many standard audio and video files.
  • Makes it possible to compress an entire 2 hours movie with a quite acceptable quality into a 128 Mb memory card and watch it on the road.
  • Supports fullscreen on both landscape and portrait devices. (the screenshots on this page are in window mode, not fullscreen)
  • Rotates and zooms the video to make full use of available screen area.
  • Supports MJPEG, making it possible to shoot a video clip with many low end digital cameras with memory card, insert the card into your device and watch it.

Thumbs up Power users only, please: Energy Profiler

Forum Nokia has released a tool, primarily aimed at developers but of interest to power users trying to work out where that extra 10% of battery capacity is going. Nokia Energy Profiler works with all applications, built-in and third party and should identify any culprits!

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] is a stand-alone test and measurement application for Nokia S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 devices (and onwards). The application allows developers to test and monitor their application’s energy usage in real time in the target device.
The application is available as a SIS package and can be installed to Nokia S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 devices. The application is also compatible with Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices, but measurement works only in 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 1 and onwards.
Installation

The installation package (SIS) can be transferred to a device in multiple different ways, for example, using USB, Bluetooth, MMC, or direct download from the Internet. In the following example, the application is installed using a USB cable and Nokia PC Suite. If you don’t have PC suite installed, you can use alternative methods or you can download and install PC suite from Nokia product support pages.

Figure 1: USB connection mode selection

1. Connect the device to a PC using a USB cable.
2. Select the PC Suite mode for USB connection.
3. Double-click the SIS package in PC Suite.
4. Answer Yes to the installation confirmation in PC.

Nokia PC suite now transfers the SIS package automatically to the device and starts the installation procedure.
5. Answer Yes to the installation confirmation on the device screen.
6. Select Continue in the Details screen.
7. Wait for the application to be installed. A progress bar is shown on the screen.

After installation, the device returns to the state where it was before the installation started. You can also see an “Installation complete” confirmation note on your PC, and can detach the USB cable. You are now ready to do your first measurements with the Nokia Energy Profiler.

Usage

The Nokia Energy Profiler application icon can be found from the installed applications folder of your device, typically named ‘Applications’ or ‘My Own’.
1. Start the application by selecting the icon and pressing the selection key.
2. Open the menu and select Start to start tracing and recording the power usage of the device.

Figure 2: Nokia Energy Profiler started

Figure 3: Nokia Energy Profiler menu

Figure 4: Measurement running in the Nokia Energy Profiler

You can see a blinking red dot and a graph drawn on the screen. Leave Nokia Energy Profiler running and perform your testing.
TIPS

  • Don’t keep unnecessary applications running during the test. Unnecessary applications, even if they are in the background, may affect the results because Nokia Energy Profiler measures the total power usage.
  • If your test case is long, you can also record screen shots during the test as part of the trace. See Options > Settings > Left arrow for screen shot settings. You can insert markers to the trace by pressing ‘5’.
  • Do not keep the charger connected during measurements because the charging power is also calculated into the results. The background of the graph is gray when the charger is connected.

After the test is executed, go back to the Nokia Energy Profiler application and select Options > Stop to stop the measurements. Save the results by selecting Options > File > Save.
Now you can either view the results on the screen immediately or export the results in various formats for later analysis by selecting Options > File > Export.

Thumbs up New versions of Oxygen Phone Manager II for Nokia, Symbian OS phones released

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] has released new versions of their popular “better PC Suite” applications - Oxygen Phone Manager II for Nokia and Oxygen Phone Manager II for Symbian OS phones.
The first application — now in version 2.17 — is only slightly changed and features several improvements in the Phonebook, Export and Call Register menus. In addition, the Oxygen Phone Manager II for Nokia phones v2.17 has increased model detections speed and now includes “partial” support for the Nokia 6500 Classic.
As for the Oxygen Phone Manager II for Symbian OS phones, it can now work with six more mobile phone models, including the Nokia N82 and five Samsung’s smartphones (i450, i520, i550, i560 and i570). Then there’s improved support for the Nokia N95, as well as minor changes in Phonebook, Log Records, Messaging and Application Manager menus.
Finally, along with the announcement of the new versions, Oxygen also introduced a new way of licensing their products. For 5.95 EUR — roughly $8.75 — per month, users will always have the latest version of Oxygen Phone Manager II for their phones…

Thumbs up Coming soon: Missing Sync for Symbian (Mac OS X)

Mark/Space is planning to bring [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]. Missing Sync is a sync solution for Mac OS X users, it allows syncronisation of contacts (Apple Address Book), calendar entries (iCal), photos (iPhoto), videos (Quick Time) and music (iTunes) to and from the phone. The software supports all UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition phones and will be made available in Q1 2008.

The software also supports a number of other third party programs such as Microsoft Entourage (Outlook equivalent on Mac OS X) and Chronos SOHO Organizer.
Nokia does provide a number of tools for Mac users such as [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] and [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]. However Missing Sync provides an all round solution and has additional functionality. It will also be very welcome for UIQ 3 users (Sony Ericsson and Motorola) who currently have limited Mac connectivity options.
Missing Sync is currently available for the other major mobile platforms including Windows Mobile, Palm and Blackberry. I know it is popular among Mac and Windows Mobile users who have told me they value it stability and ease of use.
Mark/Space are looking for feedback on what users would like to see in the product. To participate in this process [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...].
Here is a screenshot from the Windows Mobile version of Missing Sync:

Thumbs up S60 goes China; Announces new Chinese language blog "Play around S60"

Apparently, it’s not the Scandinavians nor North Americans that visit S60 Blogs the most — it’s the people from China. So, it was only the common sense to start writing on Chinese and attract more developers and fans to Nokia’s popular platform.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of Chinese language is well… poor to say the least, but I’m sure whoever can read the Chinese and like the mobile phones will find the “Play around S60″ blog interesting. Two S60 enthusiasts from Nokia’s Beijing office, Jim Lee & Samuel Leung, will host the blog and according to Phil Schwarzmann they’re “guaranteed to author an excellent blog.” We’ll have to take his word on that…

Thumbs up Homebrew project management

Thanks to AAS reader Martin Mauch for alerting us to his new home-brew S60 (all versions) Python-based project and task management system, MobileGTD . Based on plain text files in a folder hierarchy, this does have the benefit of complete platform independence, at least in theory.

MobileGTD turns your Series 60 phone into a GTD notebook on steroids
Features
  • Based on a simple file and directory structure (easy synchronization with PC)
  • Use your favourite file explorer to browse your actions
  • Usable as a simple inbox, allowing you to create projects on the fly
  • Searchable project list view
  • Project editing functionality (add/remove actions/infos)
  • Processing functionality (automatically find done actions)
  • Review assistance (find projects with no active next action and projects that have not changed for a certain time)
  • Compatible to GTDFiles
Screenshots

Click on the images to see the original Flickr page with explanations.

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]
The project details view

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]
Creating a new action

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]
Explanation

MobileGTD uses simple text files for projects. Each line in a project file can be either an action or an info. When adding an action to a project, a new line is added to the project file and a file is created in a directory structure corresponding to your contexts. If you e.g. create an action "Computer Download new version of MobileGTD" MobileGTD will create a file "Download new version of MobileGTD.act" in a directory called "Computer/". You can also use nested contexts, e.g. "Computer/Online/" to further structur your contexts. To avoid too much typing you can define abbreviations for contexts, you could e.g. define "26" to be expanded to "Computer/Online/".
You can then use any file explorer to browse through your actions and delete done ones. When processing projects MobileGTD automatically searches for deleted actions and sets them to done in the project file.
Summary

If this sounds rather complicated, fear not! It's dead simple! All you have to do is use the graphical interface to create and manage your projects and any file explorer to browse through the actions and delete the ones you have done.
