Why S60's Touch demo DIDN'T suck...
To be filed under 'editorials that I was about to write but someone else beat me to it', Ricky Cadden (moonlighting over at SMS Text News) has [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]. I completely agree with your points, Ricky, I'd much rather see S60 have touch added as an extra than see a whole new iPhone-wannabe interface.

S60v3 Feature Pack 2 Video
Nokia has announced new devices at Mobile World Congress. An aspect that wasn’t really considered, is that all of those devices are running with an improved version of the S60v3 UI - Feature Pack 2.
N96, N78, 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator - a lot has been written about the features of these partly spectacular devices, but actually nothing what changes the new UI brings.
As far as this video shows, Feature Pack 2 brings nice transition animations between changes of various screens.
Accelerometer performing auto rotation with the nice transition rotation effect we know from Apple’s iPhone exists also with Feature Pack 2, a feature I really like.
Also the gallery has been renewed, it’s called “Images” and the overview about the images has been changed.
Menu navigation seems to be very fast; that is probably not only a result of the sped up S60v3 UI, but also of better hardware.
It’s clear that there are even more changes we cannot see from the video. Seems like we have to wait for the release of the first Feature Pack 2 featured devices.

FlyingMoney Manager helps Symbian UIQ smartphone owners manage their finances on the go
Recently, FlyingBird Software released finance management application FlyingMoney Manager for Symbian UIQ 3.x devices. The easy-to-use application allows users to track incomes and expenses, create budgets, and analyze their financial activity. Users can set unlimited number of accounts, categorize transactions, run budget reports and export them as CSV files, and password protect their data. In addition, FlyingMoney Manager supports various transaction types and options — including multiple-currency transactions, as well as scheduled and memorized transactions. Finally, after you've entered all your transaction data, you can find the one you need at any time thanks to the built-in search tool…
As always, the "problem" with such apps is to discipline yourself to use them on a daily basis — or whenever you have a new expense/income entry. That's why software developers provide users with free trial versions, I guess. Just follow [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...], download the free trial and if you like it you can always buy the full version for $25.75.

Google Maps now native on UIQ

Following the earlier release of the native [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] and [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] versions, Google has finally released its popular Google Maps as a native application for Symbian UIQ smartphones.
The new application is certainly faster than a Java midlet, and also (like S60 and Windows Mobile versions) features [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...], which basically gives a guess of your whereabouts. Everything else is pretty much the same…
So Sony Ericsson smartphone and Motorola Z8 (actually we're not sure whether the non-touchscreen "flavor" of the UIQ is supported) owners, point your Opera Mobile to [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] and take it from there.

Yahoo announces onePlace; Brings Yahoo! Go 3.0 to Europe

Yesterday Yahoo announced onePlace, "a revolutionary mobile content management solution," to enable consumers to "better manage the wide selection of content available across the Internet." The idea is provide a single point from where users can access all their favorite content whether it's static or dynamic. That being said, Yahoo's onePlace includes such features as centralized and open content management from where users add or link any content they want, personalized views (Collections, Categories, Pulse, Favorites), dynamic content (sources) updates, mobile RSS reader, and smart organization which enables users to group content and create "rich experience around a specific topic." Yahoo! onePlace is expected to launch in Q2 2008.
At the same time, the search/portal giant announced the upcoming availability of Yahoo! Go 3.0 for a number of European countries, as well as several new European-based widgets that will be accessible across Yahoo!'s mobile browser and client-based offerings. Within the next two months, users in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK will be able to access localized services from new mobile widget development partners including Eurosport, XING, eBay, MySpace and Dopplr.

Review: Handy Weather for S60
As Steve Litchfield always likes to say "filed under articles I wanted to write," [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]. One of my favorite S60 applications, I only discovered it at this years Mobile World Congress while sitting next to Jonathan Greene from [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] and looking at that awesome screensaver pictured above.
One thing Steve forgot to mention in his review, and one reason why I love this application so much, is the fact that I can set the screensaver to lock my phone no matter what I'm doing. Without Handy Weather installed the only way my N82 locked its keypad was if I went to the standby screen, now it doesn't matter what application I'm in, I can set my phone to lock automatically when the screensaver kicks in.
It makes paying for [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] seem a bit … useless really, just spend the money on [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]!

fringME! widget updated; Now works with UIQ smartphones
fring has just announced that they've updated the fringME! widget to allow web-to-mobile chat feature. The idea is to provide users with a widget they could use on their blog, social network profile or website and allow their visitors to contact them while on-the-go. In addition, Symbian S60 users with GPS-equipped handsets can also show their location to site/blog/profile visitors using the "Find Me" function. Unfortunately this isn't available for UIQ smartphones, but then again there are no single GPS-equipped Symbian UIQ smartphone at the moment. Yeah, you could use the Bluetooth GPS receiver, but that's a hassle.
Anyway, to start using fringME! you will need the latest version of [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]. Then simply visit the [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] to choose a widget design, copy and paste an html code onto your chosen web pages, switch on and configure fringME! on your mobile handset, and you're ready to go.
