Palm has announced it is developing a new Linux platform for mobile devices. Palm CEO Ed Colligan reported that the new OS will combine features of Garnet OS (ex Palm OS) and a Linux core. Palm owns perpetual license for Garnet OS code, which allows using it in any products, including other operating system. The new platform implies the following aspects: devices based on it should support existing Garnet OS applications and ensure multitasking and the ability to handle simultaneous voice and data.
The official name of the platform hasn’t been disclosed yet. Palm, the current owner of the Palm brand, might call it Palm OS. Linux-based products might come up by the end of this year or later. In addition, Ed Colligan said that Palm would not license the new OS to outside companies.
