Tip of the Week: Get Moving with the Nokia 5500 SDK
The recently introduced Nokia 5500 Sport phone is one very cool S60 3rd Edition device. Designed for active people, it includes an internal sensor that provides a continuous output of acceleration values for the device's three axes (X, Y, and Z). A specialized, pre-loaded application, called the 3D accelerometer, uses the acceleration data to monitor the user's movements. The sensor API makes the sensor's output available for use in other applications, such as sports monitoring and mobile games, and the sensor SDK plug-in is available now.

The Business Case for Mobile Music
From a developer's perspective, the mobile music market offers a great opportunity. Any music service can be built on the S60 platform. Also, the S60 platform is based on open specifications and industry standards: Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Digital Rights Management (DRM), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), and MP3. Mobile-music business models are flexible and include individual downloads, subscriptions, and radio. For example, all Nokia S60 devices support MP3 ring tones, and many also support stereo music and FM radio.
Despite all the hype around Apple Computer's iPod music devices, Nokia has actually sold more music-capable Series 40 and S60 phones. More precisely, while there are "only" 32 million iPods in use, the number of Series 40 and S60 devices from Nokia is 46.5 million. Nokia expects the total will grow to 80 million such devices by year's end.

RDA Lets Developers Test Applications via the Web
Forum Nokia Technical Support recently launched the Remote Device Access (RDA) service for Forum Nokia PRO and Forum Nokia Champion members. The RDA service offers developers real-time access to Nokia platform devices for testing mobile applications and services, making application testing easier than ever before. Using the RDA service with a Web browser, developers can test their applications on Nokia devices. The RDA service covers a wide variety of S60 devices and Series 80 devices, including prototype devices, and it lets developers access multiple devices simultaneously. The RDA service costs 8 euros (or approximately $10.20 USD) an hour.
