At its recent Nokia Connection event in Singapore, Nokia introduced the Nokia 6275/6275i and Nokia 2875/2875i CDMA camera phones; the Nokia 6151 and Nokia 6080 3G phones; and the Nokia 1110i phone, which is aimed at first-time users.

CodeWarrior and Carbide.c++ Development Tool Update

CodeWarrior® products are in maintenance mode. There are no new features or new Symbian OS versions planned for CodeWarrior products after August 2006. Nokia will continue to provide support, including bug fixing, until at least December 2007. Nokia recommends that customers migrate to Carbide.c++ for projects starting in Q4 2006.
Here's a summary of Carbide.c++ products:
- Carbide.c++ Express: Available now for free download. Provides basic support for S60 development using an SDK.
- Carbide.c++ Developer Edition (299 euros [$377 USD], September 2006): Will support S60 development, on-device debugging, and a graphical UI design tool.
- Carbide.c++ Professional Edition (1,299 euros [$1,639 USD], September 2006): For developers with access to pre-production phones. Enhanced debug and performance analysis tools will greatly accelerate application design.
Nokia recommends that developers who are contemplating new projects this year also consider the following:
- CodeWarrior® Development Studio for Symbian OS v3.1, Personal Edition is currently the only commercial product that supports S60 3rd Edition application development.
- CodeWarrior Personal Edition customers can upgrade to Carbide.c++ Developer Edition for 150 euros ($189 USD) (September 2006).
- CodeWarrior Professional Edition customers can upgrade to Carbide.c++ Professional Edition for 650 euros ($820 USD) (September 2006).
- Developers who purchase CodeWarrior by September 2006 will get a 50 percent discount on the upgrade.

Symbian Signed Supports Freeware Applications for S60 3rd Edition

For the Symbian Signed freeware opportunity launched last year, Symbian used a certification model created by Symbian, Forum Nokia, and Sony Ericsson for trusted freeware applications. Now, with Symbian platform security introduced in S60 3rd Edition devices, an important path has been opened for freeware applications that require certification. Although most functions are open and certain capabilities can be granted by the user at the time of the application's installation, other capabilities can't be granted by the user; these require certification of the software. Certification can be achieved with Symbian freeware support. The certification process for freeware applications is run by Cellmania, which tests and certifies the applications at no cost to developers. Cellmania also makes the applications available in its catalog, and freeware developers can place the applications in their preferred distribution channels.

Motion-Sensitive Software for the Nokia 5500 Sport Phone

The Nokia 5500 Sport phone, an S60 3rd Edition device announced last month, is Nokia's first mobile phone to use a 3D motion sensor. This feature creates new user-experience possibilities. In the Nokia 5500 Sport, software using this feature helps users monitor aspects of their exercise programs, such as number of calories burned, speed, distance covered, and number of steps taken. The technology could also be used to control other applications. For example, slide-presenter software might switch slides when the user moves the phone in a certain way. To help developers create new, motion-sensitive applications, Nokia will soon introduce an SDK for devices with 3D accelerometers. Nokia plans to introduce other phones that use 3D-motion-sensor technology in the near future.

Forum Nokia Champion Ports Application to S60 3rd Edition

Antony Pranata enjoys the dual distinction of being a Forum Nokia Champion and one of the first mobile developers anywhere to port an application to S60 3rd Edition. His first S60 3rd Edition application is a freeware program called Screenshot for Symbian OS. As its name implies, this application captures screen shots from a smartphone's display. Users can capture single images or sequences. The application can capture image sequences in increments of one, two, or five seconds. Users can view the screen shots on their own phones, send them to other phones or PCs via Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) or e-mail, or download them to PCs by using Bluetooth connectivity or a USB cable.

Tip of the Week: Quick Help on Developer Discussion Boards

If you haven't visited the Forum Nokia Developer Discussion Boards recently, you haven't really experienced the Forum Nokia Discussion Boards. The number of developers receiving peer-to-peer help on the boards has risen by a third in the first half of 2006, and the mean response time for help on the boards has been cut in half.
Consider a recent question posted by a member struggling with a change in the Symbian Trap/Leave construction. Within four hours, the member received several answers, including specific direction from Forum Nokia Champion Antony Pranata that included code snippets and pointers to relevant files in the S60 3rd Edition SDK.

Consumers Embrace Mobile Convergence: Nokia Survey

Consumers are not only embracing mobile convergence, but are also clamoring for more of it, according to new research from Nokia. Nearly half those surveyed use their mobile devices as their main cameras. More than two-thirds predict that music-enabled mobiles will replace their MP3 players. And nearly half want to connect their mobile devices to their home electronics.
