It has been known for a while that Beautiful Katamari is coming to the Xbox 360, and eager gamers woke up this morning to find a nice surprise: a playable demo. This is one of the few demos lately that comes in at under 1GB—in fact, at 432MB, it's downright tiny. I gave the demo a download and played it. Yup, that's Katamari all right.
The demo gives you three minutes to roll up as many...things...as you can. If you've played any of the previous games, you know what to do here: you control the Katamari using the two analog sticks almost as if you were controlling a tank. Dealing with some tight spaces and the issue of momentum keeps things interesting. At the beginning and the end of the level, the King of All Cosmos will say some funny things, and that's really it. The game looks nice in high definition, but this isn't a game that has ever really impressed graphically. It's not that it has ever looked bad, it's just that Katamari Damaci just isn't a graphical showcase.
The game is promised to ship during the Fall months for the 360, and the King promises us online multiplayer. I'm looking forward to seeing what they've done to keep the format fresh in the final version.
