Post Argentina....

Argentina have not won a major tournament since the 1993 Copa America and there is a general feeling among players, coaches and officials that they must win the continental tournament this time.
So there will be no experimenting with players, as has happened in previous Copa Americas. Nor have any players asked to be excluded because they need a holiday, as in the case of Ronaldinho and Kaka of Brazil. The absence of these key players for Argentina’s great rivals has further improved confidence.

Alfio Basile, who led Argentina to their last two Copa triumphs (the other was in 1991), is back for his second stint as coach. This time round, he has established a secondary squad of home-based players, whom he coaches regularly, but the Copa party will be mostly drawn from the Europe-based contingent because they have more experience of a higher class of football. Many of the latter group have been in good form this season, especially strikers such as Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Hernan Crespo and Javier Saviola.

Basile is also spoilt for choice when it comes to goalkeepers – the outstanding Roberto Abbondanzieri and Leo Franco, who are both Europe-based, and the younger, home-based Oscar Ustari and Juan Pablo Carrizo. One problem may be the lack of warm-up games. This year, both the Europe-based and the home-based sides had played only once up to the end of May (a 1-0 win against France and a 0-0 draw against Chile respectively). Friendlies against Switzerland and Algeria were scheduled for early June.

Argentina squad:
Goalkeepers: Roberto Abbondanzieri (Getafe/SPA), Juan Pablo Carrizo (River Plate), Agustin Orion (San Lorenzo).

Defenders: Roberto Ayala (Valencia/SPA), Javier Zanetti (Inter Milan/ITA), Hugo Ibarra (Boca Juniors), Gabriel Milito (Real Zaragoza/SPA), Gabriel Heinze (Manchester United/ENG), Daniel Diaz (Boca Juniors), Nicolas Burdisso (Inter Milan/ITA).

Midfielders: Luis Gonzalez (Porto/POR), Javier Mascherano (Liverpool/ENG), Esteban Cambiasso (Inter Milan/ITA), Fernando Gago (Real Madrid/SPA), Pablo Aimar (Real Zaragoza/SPA), Juan Sebastian Veron (Estudiantes), Juan Roman Riquelme (Boca Juniors).

Forwards: Lionel Messi (Barcelona/SPA), Hernan Crespo (Inter Milan/ITA), Diego Milito (Real Zaragoza/SPA), Carlos Tevez (West Ham United/ENG), Rodrigo Palacio (Boca Juniors).

Fixtures

July 2 Argentina v Colombia (Maracaibo)

Default Bolivia

Bolivia have failed to get beyond the first round or even win a game at the Copa America since finishing as runners-up in the 1997 edition, which they hosted at high altitude. They drew two and lost one game in 1999, lost all three in 2001 without scoring, and repeated their 1999 record in Peru three years ago.
Bolivia’s youth development programmes have failed so badly that in the last World Cup qualifying campaign, they were still looking to the generation that took them to the 1994 finals, with players such as Julio Baldivieso, Luis Cristaldo, Erwin Sanchez and Oscar Sanchez all soldiering on well into their thirties.
There are few signs of a revival. Even playing in La Paz, at 3,600 metres, Bolivia won only three out of nine matches in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers, and they finished bottom.

Another problem has been that the cash-strapped national association finds it difficult to arrange friendlies, and by mid-May the team had played only two games since the qualifiers for Germany finished in October 2005.

As if that were not enough, the local clubs often get in the way, refusing to release players for training camps.

Bolivia squad:
Goalkeepers: Hugo Suárez (Wilstermann, Bolivia), Sergio Galarza (Oriente Petrolero, Bolivia).

Defenders: Miguel Hoyos (The Strongest, Bolivia), Luis Torrico (Bolívar, Bolivia), Jorge Ortiz (Blooming, Bolivia), Limbert Méndez (Wilstermann, Bolivia), Edemir Rodríguez (Real Potosí, Bolivia), Ronald Raldes (Rosario Central, Argentina), Pedro Zabala (Universitario, Bolivia), Lorgio Alvarez (Cerro Porteño, Paraguay), Juan Manuel Peña (Villarreal, Spain).

Midfielders: Leonel Reyes (Bolívar), Ronald García (Aris FC, Greece) Sacha Lima (Wilstermann), Joselito Vaca (Blooming), Gualberto Mojica (Pacos Ferreira, Portugal), Darwin Peña (Real Potosí), Gonzalo Galindo (The Strongest, Bolivia), Jhasmani Campos (Oriente Petrolero, Bolivia).

Forwards: Juan Carlos Arce (Corinthians, Brazil), Nelson Sossa (Wilstermann), Pablo Salinas (The Strongest), Augusto Andaveris (La Paz FC, Bolivia), Jaime Moreno (DC United, U.S.A), Diego Cabrera (Aurora, Bolivia).

Default Brazil

The Copa America is Brazil’s first chance to make amends for their limp display at last year’s World Cup. It will also provide Dunga with his first competitive internationals in charge, and the games will be the team’s first appearances in South America since October 2005.
Having spent nine months demanding that the players sweat blood, Dunga will be without leading pair Ronaldinho and Kaka because they have asked for a holiday. It is a huge snub and suggests that they feel that playing in Venezuela is somehow beneath their dignity.

Surprisingly, the coach has accepted the situation. “We have to respect that each player thinks in a different way,” he said, ignoring the fact that both players had more than 30 days’ holiday after the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Dunga has said he has no need to run the rule over Ronaldo, and defender Lucio will also be missing, because of injury. Kaka’s absence could open the way for Diego to fill the playmaking role. Dunga also needs a partner for Robinho in attack, and must settle on a goalkeeper.

Brazil won the 2004 Copa America with a second-string side, beating Argentina on penalties in a memorable Final. For the good of the tournament, it would be preferable for them not to repeat the feat this time around.

Brazil squad:
Goalkeepers: Helton (FC Porto), Doni (AS Roma).

Defenders: Alex Silva (São Paulo), Alex Rodrigo (PSV Eindhoven), Juan (Bayer Leverkusen), Naldo (Werder Bremen), Gilberto (Hertha Berlin), Maicon (Inter Milan), Daniel Alves (Sevilla FC), Kleber (Santos).

Midfielders: Josue (São Paulo), Diego (Werder Bremen), Elano (Shakhtar Donetsk), Mineiro (Hertha Berlin), Anderson (FC Porto), Fernando (Bordeaux), Gilberto Silva (Arsenal FC).

Forwards: Robinho (Real Madrid), Vagner Love (CSKA Moscow), Afonso Alves (SC Herenveen), Fred (Lyon), Julio Baptista (Real Madrid).

Fixtures

July 1 Brazil v Chile (Maturin))
July 4 Brazil v Ecuador (Puerto La Cruz)

Default Chile

Not even a 4-0 mauling by Brazil in March has blown away the feeling of optimism currently surrounding Chilean football. After missing out on the last two World Cups, they appear to be on the upward path. That setback against Brazil aside, the national team’s results and performances have been encouraging ever since their tour to Europe at the end of last season. And Chilean clubs have been performing with credit in the Libertadores Cup.
The main reason to be cheerful is that midfielder Matias Fernandez spearheads a hugely promising collection of young players. Villarreal are putting pressure on him to miss out on the Copa America, but even if he were to be absent, there are enough
options for coach Nelson Acosta to be tempted to unleash the occasional smile.

Up front, the emergence of Humberto Suazo appears to have put an end to the years of dependence, at least psychologically, on Marcelo Salas. Just behind him, the classy Luis Jimenez and the wonderfully skilful Jorge Valdivia are pressing their claims.

The problem is the lack of commanding figures at the other end. Jorge Vargas is a competent defender, but Chile are lacking a truly world-class centre-back. Teenage utility man Arturo Vidal, about to join Bayer Leverkusen, says he will be the world’s best in the position in two years’ time, but Acosta will have to decide whether Vidal should stay with the senior team or go to the World Youth Cup. He faces the same decision about prodigiously talented winger Alexis Sanchez.

Chile squad:
Goalkeepers: Claudio Bravo (Real Sociedad), Nicolas Peric (Audax Italiano), Fernando Hurtado (Cobreloa)

Defenders: Alvaro Ormeno (Gimnasia), Gonzalo Jara (Colo Colo), Gonzalo Fierro (Colo Colo), Boris Rieloff (Audax Italiano), Ismael Fuentes (Jaguares), Jorge Vargas (Red Bulls Salzburg), Pablo Contreras (Celta Vigo), Sebastian Roco (Santiago Wanderers), Mark Gonzalez (Liverpool), Rodrigo Tello (Sporting)

Midfielders: Arturo Sanhueza (Colo Colo), Rodrigo Melendez (Colo Colo), Manuel Iturra (Univeridad de Chile), Jose Luis Cabion (Melipilla), Jorge Valdivia (Palmeiras), Matias Fernandez (Villarreal), Carlos Villanueva (Audax Italiano)

Forwards: Reinaldo Navia (Atlas), Humberto Suazo (Colo Colo), Juan Lorca (Colo Colo), Rodolfo Moya (Audax Italiano), Roberto Gutierrez (Universidad Catolica)

Fixtures
Group B
June 27 Ecuador v Chile (Puerto Ordaz)
July 1 Brazil v Chile (Maturin)
July 4 Mexico v Chile (Puerto La Cruz)

Default Colombia

Colombia have had success in the last two Copa Americas – champions in 2001 and semi-finalists three years later – but that has been little compensation for their failure to qualify for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
New coach Jorge Luis Pinto is categorical about his priorities, saying: “There’s not the slightest doubt that Colombia are going to the World Cup. The Copa America is an excellent tournament in terms of preparing for the qualifiers. We have to build a new team, and it will be formed with four or five from the last qualification campaign and others who have come up through the youth ranks.”

Keeper Miguel Calero and defender Ivan Cordoba were in the squad that went to France 98, and although stalwart
centre-back Mario Yepes is injured, Luis Amaranto Perea is also still around.

Scoring goals has been the big problem, though Pinto believes Colombia have quality coming through. Radamel Falcao Garcia, Hugo Rodallega and Cesar Valoyes are exciting prospects. Nobody has truly established himself as the creative force in midfield; there could be opportunities here for Tressor Moreno, David Ferriera, Alvaro Dominguez and Macnelly Torres.

Pinto will look to the Copa to sift through his options for the new Colombia. “I want a team that is dynamic, aggressive and direct,” he says.

Colombia squad:
Goalkeepers: Robinson Zapata (Cucuta, Colombia), Agustín Julio (Tolima, Colombia), Miguel Calero (Pachuca, Mexico)

Defenders: Jair Benítez (Deportivo Cali, Colombia), Javier Arizala (Tolima), Gerardo Vallejo (Tolima), Aquivaldo Mosquera, (CF Pachuca, Mexico), Ivan Ramiro Cordoba (Inter Milan, Italy), Camilo Zúñiga (Atlético Nacional), Amaranto Perea (Atlético Madrid, Spain), Mario Yepes (Paris Saint Germain, France).

Midfielders: Jorge Banguero (América, Colombia), Alvaro Domínguez (Cali), Macnelly Torres (Cúcuta), Jaime Castrillón (Medellín, Colombia), David Ferreira (Atletico Paranaense, Brazil), Fabián Vargas (Internacional, Brazil), Vladimir Marín (Libertad, Paraguay), John Viafara (Southampton FC, England)

Strikers: Sergio Herrera (Cali), Cesar Valoyes (Medellín), Hugo Rodallega (Monterrey, Mexico), Luis Gabriel Rey (Morelia, Mexico), Andrés Chitiva (CF Pachuca, Mexico), Edixon Perea (Bordeaux, France).

Default Ecuador

For all their recent progress, Ecuador have a dismal record in the Copa America, their best showing being fourth place the last two times they staged the tournament (1959 and 1993). Despite this, and the tough group they face in Venezuela, coach Luis Fernando Suarez has his sights set high.
“Ecuador lack a major international title,” he muses, anxious to keep up the momentum generated by last year’s achievement of reaching the second round at the World Cup in only the country’s second finals. “This is perhaps the most important moment in Ecuadorean football. The players have to understand that the demands keep growing, the pressure rises and the opponents will want to beat Ecuador more than ever.”

Germany 2006 put Ecuador in the spotlight and as a consequence an unprecedented number of the players have moved abroad. Suarez is delighted with this, but realises that it adds a certain complication to the process of World Cup qualification. “Before, we used to call up 18 or 20 players,” he says. “Now we’ll need 25 or 26, because when the overseas-based players come back to Quito we’ll have to see how they are and how they feel on their return to altitude.”

Suarez is casting his net wider, and the Copa America will help him decide who stays and who goes. A replacement must be found for all-time top scorer Agustin Delgado, who has quit the international scene, but the resources at goalkeeper have been boosted by the naturalisation of Argentina-born Marcelo Elizaga and Javier Klimowicz.

Ecuador squad:
Goalkeepers: Cristian Mora (League of Quito), Marcelo Elizaga (Emelec).

Defenders: Ulises De la Cruz (Reading FC, England), Néicer Reasco (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Oscar Bagui (Olmedo), Iván Hurtado (Athletic National, Colombia), Giovanni Espinoza (Vitesse Arnhem, Holland), Jorge Guagua (Colón de Santa Fe, Argentina), Renán Street (League of Quito).

Midfielders: Edison Méndez (PSV Eindhoven, Holland), Antonio Valencia (Wigan Athletic, England), Segundo Castillo (Red Star Belgrade, Serbia), Edwin Tenorio (League of Quito), Patricio Urrutia (League of Quito), David Quiroz (Nacional de Quito), Walter Ayoví (Nacional de Quito), Pedro Quiñónez (Nacional de Quito).

Forwards: Carlos Tenorio (Al-Sadd, Qatar), Felix Borja (Olympiakos, Greece), Cristian Benítez (Nacional de Quito), Felipe Caicedo (FC Basel, Switzerland), Pablo Palacios (Sport Quito).

Fixtures
Group B
June 27 Ecuador v Chile (Puerto Ordaz)
July 1 Mexico v Ecuador (Maturin)
July 4 Brazil v Ecuador (Puerto La Cruz)

Default Mexico

Mexico along with the United States, are in the unusual situation of playing in two continental tournaments in quick succession. First comes the Gold Cup in the USA, organised by CONCACAF, of which Mexico are members. Immediately after that, they travel to Venezuela for the Copa America as guests under an arrangement that goes back to 1993.
The target of new coach Hugo Sanchez is to win the Gold Cup and get to the semi-finals of the Copa. Mexico have reached two Copa Finals, losing to Argentina in 1993 and hosts Colombia in 2001. Last time, in Peru, they beat Argentina 1-0 in a group match but were then thumped 4-0 by eventual champions Brazil in the last eight.

Sanchez, a bitter personal rival of predecessor Ricardo Lavolpe, has insisted there will be no reprisals against players such as Rafael Marquez and team captain Pavel Pardo, both sympathisers with the man he succeeded. He has also backed down from his previous opposition to naturalised players, although both Brazil-born Antonio Naelson and Argentina-born Guillermo Franco have been marginalised, while veteran forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco, sidelined by Lavolpe, has returned.

Mexico have a tough draw, facing Brazil, Chile and Ecuador. Yet they are comfortable against South American teams, even winning their last meeting with Brazil, at the 2005 Confederations Cup. But the alarm bells will start ringing if they cross paths with the United States, against whom they have a dismal recent record.

Mexico squad:
Goalkeepers: Guillermo Ochoa (América), Oswaldo Sanchez (Santos Laguna).

Defenders: Fausto Pinto (Pachuca), Jaime Lozano (Tigres), Jony Magallon (Guadalajara/Chivas), Rafael Marquez (FC Barcelona, Spain), Israel Castro (Pumas), Gonzalo Pineda (Guadalajara/Chivas), Francisco Rodriguez (Guadalajara/Chivas), Jose Castro (América).

Midfielders: Andres Guardado (Atlas), Ramon Morales (Guadalajara/Chivas), Alberto Medina (Guadalajara/Chivas), Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul), Jaime Correa (Pachuca), Adolfo Bautista (Guadalajara/Chivas), Fernando Arce (Morelia).

Strikers: Nery Castillo (Olympiakos), Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire, U.S.), Jared Borgetti (Cruz Azul), Omar Bravo (Guadalajara/Chivas), Juan Carlos Cacho (Pachuca).

Fixtures
Group B
June 27 Brazil v Mexico (Puerto Ordaz)
July 1 Mexico v Ecuador (Maturin)
