Post Brazil and Argentina continue storied rivalry

2007 Copa America
Final
Sun., Jul. 15
Brazil vs. Argentina Preview

MARACAIBO, Venezuela (AP) - Argentina has Brazil right where it wants it - in the final of the Copa America.

Irked by the way in which it lost the Copa final to Brazil three years ago in Peru, Argentina was glad both teams set up a rematch in the final on Sunday.
Argentina was moments from winning the 2004 final in injury time until Adriano scored for 2-2 in the last act of regulation, forcing a penalty shootout in which Brazil prevailed 4-2.

"It's a thorn I still have nailed to my back and I want to take it out," Argentina's Carlos Tevez said upon arriving in Venezuela three weeks ago.

That defeat, the first by Argentina to Brazil in nine Copa finals, made it easier for coach Alfio Basile to convince some of his best players to keep their boots on after the long European season. They haven't disappointed, justifying their pre-tournament favoritism by sailing through the first South American championship hosted by Venezuela.

Inspired performances by Lionel Messi, Tevez and Juan Roman Riquelme have helped the Albiceleste to a perfect 5-0 record, racking up a tournament-best 16 goals.

Argentina dispatched Peru 4-0 in the quarterfinals and Gold Cup runner-up Mexico 3-0 in the semifinals, hijacking the jogo bonito (beautiful play) expected of its archrival.

However, since making the final, the Argentines have been determined to play down hype that it was out to pay back Brazil.

"To focus in on the word revenge generates an obsession that can have a negative impact on the team's psychological health," midfielder Esteban Cambiasso said. "For us, the game is great opportunity to be crowned champions, against a rival that we all want to play."

Unlike Argentina, Brazil was blown off by Ronaldinho and Kaka, who wanted a holiday. Robinho, whose six goals make him the tournament's top scorer, has filled in nicely but Brazil's younger team has still been inconsistent. It opened with a 2-0 loss to Mexico, edged Ecuador 1-0 in its last group match, crushed Chile 6-1 in the quarterfinals, and needed a penalty shootout to knock out Uruguay in the semifinals.

"A lot of people, they say 'Brazil doesn't play good, Brazil doesn't have the same team.' Of course, we are a new team that hasn't played together, with new players," Pele said this week. "But the most important thing is to represent your country in the finals and Brazil is doing that. It's something you have to respect."

The Argentines were the last people taking Brazil for granted, not only after what happened in 2004, but also because of games since in their storied rivalry.

Brazil won 4-1 to take the 2005 Confederations Cup, and 3-0 in London last September in Dunga's first match as coach. Midfielder Elano scored twice that day, and was expected to start on Sunday.

"There's no favorite when Argentina and Brazil play," said defender Javier Zanetti, one of six Argentine veterans of the 2004 loss who traveled to Venezuela.

Indeed, parity dominates the rivalry.

In 90 meetings since 1914 - two years before the Copa America began - Brazil has won 35 times to Argentina's 33, although Argentina has 146 goals to Brazil's 142.

Brazil has five World Cups to Argentina's two, but in the Copa America Argentina has ruled.

Argentina boasts a 15-8-8 overall record in the tournament against its much larger neighbor.

The Argentines are tied with Uruguay for the most South American titles at 14, while Brazil was a distant second with seven, though it's prevailed in three of the last four editions of soccer's oldest international tournament.

Argentina's bid for its first Copa title since 1993 was likely to be without striker Hernan Crespo, despite his hopes of returning for the final after injuring his leg on a penalty kick during Argentina's 4-2 win over Colombia in group play.

Brazil will miss midfielder Gilberto Silva, who was automatically suspended after picking up his second yellow card against Uruguay.

"It's the big match, the one every player reaching the national team wants to play," said Brazil winger Daniel Alves, who will play against Argentina for the first time.

Uruguay meets Mexico for third place on Saturday in Caracas.

Possible lineups:

Argentina: Roberto Abbondanzieri, Javier Zanetti, Roberto Ayala, Gabriel Milito, Gabriel Heinze, Juan Sebastian Veron, Javier Mascherano, Esteban Cambiasso, Juan Roman Riquelme, Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez/Hernan Crespo.

Brazil: Doni, Alex, Juan, Gilberto, Maicon, Elano, Mineiro, Josue, Julio Baptista, Robinho, Vagner Love.

Post Mexico tops Uruguay to take third place

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Mexico exploited the 38th-minute expulsion of Uruguayan captain Diego Lugano for three goals and rallied for a 3-1 victory Saturday that gave El Tri third place at the Copa America.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco converted the penalty to equalize after Lugano was issued a red card for elbowing Gerardo Torrado, and Omar Bravo and Andres Guardado added second-half goals to assure Mexico of finishing third or better in four of the last five South American championships.

Sebastian Abreu gave Uruguay the lead in the 22nd minute, heading in Maximiliano Pereira's cross.

But after Blanco equalized, Bravo lifted a shot over the hands of goalkeeper Fabian Carini, who was racing off his line, in the 68th minute, and Guardado sealed the victory with a left-footed shot from 25 meters in the 76th.

Argentina and defending champion Brazil square off in the tournament final Sunday in Maracaibo.

Mexico finished third in 1997 and 1999 and lost to Colombia in the 2001 final.

El Tri, which lost to the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup two days before the start of the Copa America, has reached the semifinals five of the seven times it has been invited to the South American championships as a guest.

"This third place is a privilege and a distinction showing that Mexico is on the right track," manager Hugo Sanchez said. "My players demonstrated they are professionals and that even playing back-to-back tournaments they didn't lower their intensity."

Coming off its penalty-kick loss to Brazil in the semifinals, Uruguay struggled after Lugano's expulsion to maintain possession and feed attacker Diego Forlan.

Uruguay came to Venezuela with a strong, Europe-based team, eager to claim a record 15th title.

"We played a good game, started out dominating, and then in one minute everything changed," said Uruguayan coach Oscar Tabarez.

Mexico lost 3-0 to Argentina on Wednesday to set up the third-place match against the Uruguayans.

Lineups

URUGUAY: Fabian Carini, Andres Scotti, Diego Lugano, Carlos Valdez, Jorge Fucile, Pablo Garcia (Walter Gargano, 79), Maximiliano Pereira, Cristian Rodriguez, Ignacio Gonzalez (Fabian Canobbio, 74), Diego Forlan (Vicente Sanchez, 74), Sebastian Abreu.

MEXICO: Guillermo Ochoa, Jose Antonio Castro (Jaime Correa, 77), Francisco Rodreguez, Jhony Magallon, Fausto Pinto (Andres Guardado, 65), Gerardo Torrado, Ramon Morales, Jaime Lozano, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Nery Castillo, Omar Bravo (Luis Landin, 88).

Talking Brazil routs Argentina for Copa title

2007 Copa America
Final
Sun., Jul. 15
Brazil 3-0 Argentina Recap

MARACAIBO, Venezuela (AP) - Julio Baptista scored in the fourth minute and Brazil went on to beat Argentina 3-0 on Sunday to win the Copa America for the second consecutive time over its longtime South American rival.

Roberto Ayala had an own-goal just before halftime and Dani Alves scored his first of the tournament in the 69th to secure Brazil's eighth title in the South American championship.

It was the second straight time Brazil and Argentina had met in the final, with Brazil prevailing three years ago on penalties in Peru.

This time, Argentina was intent on reclaiming the crown and winning a record 15th title. It brought its full national team while Brazil arrived with a second-choice side after several of its regulars, like Ronaldinho and Kaka, asked to be excused.

"Lots of people criticized our team, but we're the champions," said Brazilian striker Robinho, who finished as the tournament's top socrer with six goals.

It was the 10th meeting between the heavyweights of South America in the final, with Brazil winning for the just the second time.

"Losing like this makes you angry, but there's nothing more we can do but wait for another final," Argentina's Lionel Messi said.

Others were even more somber.

"We're totally ruined," Esteban Cambiasso said. "Losing like this penetrates your soul."

Mexico beat Uruguay 3-1 on Saturday to finish in third.

Argentina dominated possession early, but the five-time World Cup champion capitalized on a more rapid counterattack and sloppy defense to punish its longtime rival.

Baptista put Brazil ahead on its first foray forward, hitting a ball into the far-side netting past stunned Argentine keeper Roberto Abbondanzieri.

The Argentines had a chance to equalize five minutes later when Juan Sebastian Veron redirected a cross from Messi, but an unmarked Juan Roman Riquelme slammed it off the left post.

Ayala severely hurt Argentina's chances five minutes before halftime, sliding to clear a low cross by Alves but instead knocking inside his own right post.

Alves, who replaced an injured Elano in the 33rd minute, all but secured the victory, finishing a counter led by Vagner Love and beating Abbondanzieri to his right.

"My players demonstrated they're capable of great things," Brazil manager Dunga said. "Argentina was the press' and everyone's favorite, but the game is decided on the field over 90 minutes."

Dunga dedicated the victory to Brazil's working families.

"We came to rescue the self-esteem of the Brazilian worker, who wakes up in the morning and returns home late at night, whose only satisfaction in life is seeing Brazil win a football match."

Argentina entered the Copa America and Sunday's final at sold-out Pachencho Romero stadium seeking to avenge its loss three years ago, when it took an 87th-minute lead only to allow an injury time equalizer and succumb on penalties.

Manager Alfio Basile returned six veterans from that loss, along with a star-studded roster of European-based players, to claim Argentina's first Copa America title since 1993 - when he last managed the side.

Lineups

Argentina: Roberto Abbondanzieri, Javier Zanetti, Roberto Ayala, Gabriel Milito, Gabriel Heinze, Juan Sebastian Veron (Luis Gonzalez, 67), Javier Mascherano, Esteban Cambiasso (Pablo Aimar, 59), Juan Roman Riquelme, Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez.

Brazil: Doni, Alex, Juan, Gilberto, Maicon, Elano (Dani Alves, 33), Mineiro, Josue, Julio Baptista, Robinho (Diego, 89), Vagner Love (Fernando, 89).
