Koontz, Dean - Intensity
The title of Dean Koontz's thriller, Intensity, says it all. Chyna Shepherd and her friend, Laura Templeton, are visiting Laura's family in northern California. Unable to sleep that evening, Chyna hears a scream in the night and realizes someone has broken into the Templeton house. That person is Edgler Foreman Vess, a killer who likes to "live with intensity." A complex man, Vess enjoys making words out of the letters in his name, such as "God fears me." Pain does not affect him like normal people; he takes pleasure in the intense feeling. And Vess also relishes killing.
Chyna is able to hide from the bloodshed as Vess murders everyone in the Templeton household. Unbeknownst to Vess, Chyna stows away in the back of his motor home, hoping to find a way to bring him to justice. During the course of the trip, she finds out about Ariel, a teenager that Vess has been holding captive for nearly a year. Now Chyna is determined to avenge her friend's death, rescue Ariel, and end Vess' reign of terror.
Koontz has written a tense and exciting psychological thriller. The majority of the story takes place over a 24 hour period, and the suspense never lets up. Koontz lets us into the minds of Vess and Chyna, enabling the reader to attempt to understand Vess' intense, murderous desires and Chyna's need to save Ariel and become her guardian angel. Vess is a formidable antagonist, and Chyna rises up from the terror around her and becomes a courageous heroine .

Koontz, Dean - Strange Highways
Strange Highways is the title story in Koontz's new collection of short stories. Joey Shannon, an alcoholic whose life has been going nowhere for 20 years, returns to his hometown for the funeral of his father. As he leaves town, he gets a mysterious second chance to relive the night in 1975 when his life began its downward spiral: to both literally and figuratively take the road that he didn't originally take. On this road he is supremely tested by conflict with his successful and charismatic older brother P.J., by conflict between his cynicism and his lost faith, and by conflict between the ultimate good and evil.

Koontz, Dean - The Taking
In one of the most dazzling books of his celebrated career, Dean Koontz delivers a masterwork of page-turning suspense that surpasses even his own inimitable reputation as a chronicler of our worst fears—and best dreams. In The Taking he tells the story of a community cut off from a world under siege, and the terrifying battle for survival waged by a young couple and their neighbors as familiar streets become fog-shrouded death traps. Gripping, heartbreaking, and triumphant in the face of mankind’s darkest hour, here is a small-town slice-of-doomsday thriller that strikes to the core of each of us to ask: What would you do in the midst of The Taking.
On the morning that will mark the end of the world they have known, Molly and Niel Sloan awaken to the drumbeat of rain on their roof. It has haunted their sleep, invaded their dreams, and now they rise to find a luminous silvery downpour drenching their small California mountain town. A strange scent hangs faintly in the air, and the young couple cannot shake the sense of something wrong.
In the night, strange noises arise, and at a distance, in the rain and the mist, mysterious lights are seen drifting among the trees. The rain diminishes with the dawn, but a moody gray-purple twilight prevails. Soon Molly, Niel, and their small band of friends will be forced to draw on reserves of strength, courage, and humanity they never knew they had. For within the misty gloom they will encounter something that reveals in a terrifying instant what is happening to their world—something that is hunting them with ruthless efficiency. Epic in scope, searingly intimate and immediate in perspective, The Taking is an adventure story like no other, a relentless roller-coaster read that brings apocalypse to Main Street and showcases the talents of one of our most original and mesmerizing novelists at the pinnacle of his powers.

Koontz, Dean- Phantoms
The lights are on in Snowfield, California, a cozy ski village nestled in the Sierra Madres, but nobody seems to be home. When Dr. Jenny Paige returns to the small town, she finds tables set for dinner, meals being prepared, and music playing in living rooms, but there's no trace of the people who put the water on to boil or set an extra place for company at the dinner table. As she explores the town, Paige finds friends and neighbors felled by a mysterious force--the bodies show no visible signs of violence or disease, and no known plague kills victims before the ice in their dinner drinks has time to melt. But the deep quiet that surrounds her offers few clues about the fate of the town's inhabitants. Dean Koontz's Phantoms strikes fear in readers from the very beginning. The mystery deepens, paving the way for a chilling journey toward the truth. If you plan to catch the film version, starring Ben Affleck and Peter O'Toole, remember that you'll be experiencing this terrifying story in a dark theater. So bring an arm to grab!
