Thumbs up [22.01.08] ATENTION : New Worm Targets S60 2nd Edition Phones

F-Secure is [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] that a new worm, Beselo, is in the wild. The worm, similar to the Commwarrior worm, targets only S60 2nd Edition handsets such as the Nokia 6600. The worm is notable for its use of social engineering; when spreading it appears as a JPEG or MP3 file which is more likely to be opened by a user. However simple common sense can readily protect you against infection.

Although the file appears to be a JPEG or MP3 file when you try to open the file it will start an instance of the application installer. At this point the sensible user would cancel the install process.
Phones can not be infected unless the install process is completed. This requires you to go through several dialogs confirming that you want to install and unknown application.
We would advise you that you never install an application of unknown origin, especially one you receive unexpectedly via Bluetooth or MMS.
All recent S60 handsets (S60 3rd Edition) are unaffected, the virus is not compatible with he new version of the software platform. Changes in the platform's security model mean worms of this type are no longer possible. There are no known virus of worms targetting S60 3rd Edition phones.

Thumbs up SMobile announces solution against Beselo, latest Symbian OS worm

In case you’re owning one of the older Symbian S60 based devices, we sincerely hope you haven’t seen you’re phone bill going through the roof. If that’s the case, you may’ve been affected by Beselo, a malicious Symbian OS worm currently spreading on mobile phone networks worldwide.
The virus is being disseminated as a multimedia file (MMS) with such monikers as Beauty.jpg, Sex.mp3 or Love.rm. When installed on the handsets, the malware gathers all the phone numbers located in the phone’s contact lists and targets them with a viral MMS carrying a SIS-packed version of the worm. In addition to harvesting these numbers, the malware also sends itself to generated numbers. To date the worm only affects older Symbian S60 powered smartphones including such models as the Nokia 6630, 7610, 6680, and N70. However, according to [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...], with modifications, this current attack could spread to many additional smartphone models.
Naturally, SMobile’s [Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...] ends with praise of the company’s Security Shield product which will protect you against all mobile malware. In case you own a Symbian S60 3rd edition based device, you’re safe without it…

Thumbs up [05.02.08]Fortinet claims new virus spreading on Symbian OS

[Only Registered and Activated Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register...]
Fortinet, the IT and mobile security vendor, claims that a new worm is spreading on the (Series60) Symbian handsets. The worm is apparently being transmitted via MMS, with names like Beauty.jpg, Sex.mp3, or Love.rm - what a cunning set of names……not!
On installation, the worm apparently targets all the phone numbers in the contact list and MMSs them a SIS-version of the worm. In addition, it also sends itself to these numbers - so friends, foes, contacts, and colleagues - beware! The problem supposedly has only been seen in China with one Operator so far, but as we know, viruses spread quickly.
Most likely, this virus/worm represents a re-coding by a script-kiddie of an existing virus - my experience with Mobile AV taught me that variants (rather than discretely different viruses) are what is currently prevalent within Mobile - and unforunately for us S60 owners, S60 is the O/S of choice for attacks.
Whether any real discernable threat/spread will be felt in Europe is another question - certainly numbers of Tier 1 Operators have either implemented or are implementing deep-inspection of attachments at the MMSC level, to stop these sorts of incidents. Fortinet happens to be of the vendors that can do this, and they happen to do it very well - so we should be able to rest easy…..
