Arrow The Comics Zone...!

The Comics Zone...!

MoonShadow is a rare find- a wildly fictional book that manages to identify with the reader. Its a coming-of-age story in a lewd, violent, funny, whimsical, tragic, even nostalgic universe. Its written as an autobiography of a fictional character. An honest retelling of his life as an intergalactic Huckleberry Finn. The artwork is painted, adding a sense of realism to the character. This gets my highest compliment: after finishing it I felt disappointment that Moonshadow was fiction.

Drawn in classic manga style, but with a hint more reality than most manga action graphic novels, Child of Dreams wisely tangles Batman and Bruce Wayne in a conspiracy with ambitious journalists from Japan. Taking place both in Gotham and later in Japan, Child of Dreams introduces a new love interest for Bruce Wayne while asserting Batman's influence on other cultures. Batman is not just a revered hero in the states, but has rabid fans in other countries. In fact, it's Batman fandom that brings enterprising young reporter Yuko Yagi to Gotham City in hopes of an exclusive interview with the Dark Detective.

Yuko gets more than she bargained for with the trip. A group of pill-popping psychos are being mysteriously transformed into carbon-copies of Batman's greatest foes and Yuko is trapped in the middle. It will take the combined might and brains of Batman and Bruce Wayne to solve the mystery and keep Yuko from harm.

A vapor or cloud of minute liquid droplets given out by a substance when heated or burned; an odorous hot vapour or gas. It powered Earth's industrial revolution, drove our boats, looms and trains, then was replaced with even more efficient sources of energy like electricity, gasoline, nuclear fission, as we headed into the modern age.
But on Kalighoul, the birthplace of Mr. Hero, steam continued to dominate the world. Kalighoul's ruler, the insidious Teknophage, harnessed it to drive his fortress of pain, used it to push gigabytes of data through his high-tech computers and it became the very blood that was pumped through his soldier's veins.
Mr. Hero was born into the Tecknophage's army of darkness. But the steam that pumped throug h his llic body was pure.
It led the people of Earth into a brighter future while stoking the flames of Kalighoul's hell

Writer: Brian Wood Art: Denys Cowan
Cedric has hit rock bottom. He's been dumped by a woman who was his whole world, and if that weren't enough to make him depressed, he's been forced to resort to prostitution, selling his body to a spoiled rich girl. He has to find a way out of his rut, out of the drugdery of his everyday existence. So he turns back to underground fighting, bloodsport for money, in order to escape the grip of his sexual "benefactor." But what he's really after is a high he gets from winning in the ring, but he's forgotten the comedown that follows.

The book wears its cinematic influences on its sleeve, sometimes veering almost into derivative territory, but it's incredibly well-executed, and it reads less like a super-hero comic and more like a drama/action with super-heroic elements. Taking a fantastic premise of a psychic with one year to live, Gray, Saiz and Palmiotti have crafted a good read with a strong central character.

21 Down starts in the middle, as we don't see where Preston gets his powers or his curse (although those who read Gen 13 #0 got a hint), and that works very well for the book. We are immediately immersed in Preston's life, and it's not the greatest thing in the world. His brother uses him to get promotions as a cop, the visions of death that he gets are beginning to wear on him, and he knows full well that he only has one year to live, which is screwing up his psyche something fierce. Gray and Palmiotti wisely make Preston likable and even heroic despite his beleaguered attitude, though; he's having a rough go of it, but he still has time to spend with an old man who doesn't have any other friends, and he still does the right thing when he knows a crime has been committed.

Head Writer: Jamie Delano Cover Artists: Richard Case Pencilers: Richard Case Inkers: Richard Case
In the spirit world, several animal avatars gather around a being, known as Coyote-Old-Man. They are concerned over affairs on the Fourth World (Earth), and further speculate as to the disappearance of one of their own – White-Buffalo-Woman.
In the desert, a man known as Snake drums out a rhythm with his hands upon a piece of flat rock. Unwittingly, Snake strikes the appropriate chords to gain the notice of the spirit world. Coyote-Old-Man suspects that Snake may be connected to White-Buffalo-Woman and assumes a human guise to investigate on his own.
In Los Angeles, a man named Cody awakens from a disturbing dream. In the dream, he envisioned himself living on the plains of the American West where he played witness to a stampede of buffalo. Cody lives with a drug-addled Indian woman named Brown Mary.
Elsewhere, a man named Brother Christopher likewise has a bizarre dream. He awakens in a secret facility in his hometown of Fort Edgar where he is hooked up to an EEG machine.
Coyote-Old-Man finds Snake who is in the midst of a psychedelic party/meeting with some close friends. He asks him where he learned the drumbeat that was used to alert the spirit world. Snake tells him that he learned it from an old band-mate, a woman named Brown Mary. Coyote-Old-Man suspects that this may in fact be White-Buffalo-Woman.

Story by Peter Milligan Art by Glyn Dillon

A stylish drifter, between houses due to being between relationships, gets sucked into a group of believers in Egyptian gods, and ends up in Ancient Egypt. As plots go, it has a lot of promise, and Milligan and Dillon don't drop the ball at all. The dialogue is sparkling, the plot is seamless, the characterisation is interesting, and the art is well cool.

The story starts out on a Romanian battlefield in 1459, where Vlad Tepes is decimating the opposition. Soon it is revealed that Vlad goes by several other names, Vlad the Impaler and Dracula, while he proceeds to brutally kill some straggling soldiers. Yet, Vlad soon will come to the realization that he is not an unstoppable killing machine, as the fabled Riders of the Dark approach. Vlad’s troops are confronted with War itself, and are no match. So, as the out matched troops flee, Vlad is left to stand and fight. A quick swing from War, takes Vlad down, and a crushing blow from the giant blue foot of War’s master keeps him down.
Jump ahead to London, 1897, and some detectives have found a dead body, with bite marks on her neck, and a bizarre tattoo. The tattoo turns out to represent lineage from the great Apocalypse (a member of the Akkaba clan), and the officers turn up dead. Someone is killing off Akkaba’s and the only one who can save them is their peerless forefather En Sabar Nur, who is not happy for being awoke.

Terra Obscura is a spin-off comic book from Alan Moore's Tom Strong series, written by Peter Hogan and drawn by Yanick Paquette and Karl Story. Each story is co-plotted by Alan Moore and Peter Hogan. It is published by Alan Moore's America's Best Comics, which is owned by DC Comics.

In the context of the Tom Strong series, it is set in an alternate Earth within Strong's dimension, where a team of science-heroes, collectively known as the Society of Major American Science Heroes (S.M.A.S.H.), have protected the public for decades. This Earth was dubbed Terra Obscura by Tom Strong when he discovered it in 1968, during his exploration of the galaxy. After Tom Strong returned to his own solar system, Terra Obscura came under attack when the moon landings of 1969 awakened a deadly alien.

The lunar invader's power was so great that several members of S.M.A.S.H. were killed (the first time Terra Obscura science-heroes had ever died in battle); Robert "The Black Terror" Benton, Doc Tom Strange's side-kick, Mike Ellis and George "The Ghost" Chance. The rest of S.M.A.S.H. were encased in a stasis field, totally helpless, orbiting the planet. The one member able to escape, Doc Tom Strange - Tom Strong's Terra Obscura counterpart, ran through space for 30 years in order to reach his recent acquaintance and hopefully get help. The two Toms returned and together managed to free the remaining members of S.M.A.S.H.
